This has been a year like no other. As COVID-19 swept the globe in 2020, work-from-home orders and online education pushed networks to their limits. We saw changes in both the amount of network traffic as well as the types of applications people used online.

Undoubtedly, internet networks played a key role in keeping people sane and connected with one another throughout this tumultuous year. Moreover, as jobs, education, and even healthcare moved online, the importance of having a reliable internet connection was more apparent than ever before.

Yet, throughout all the gloom that this year has brought with it, many WISPs stepped up to ensure that their communities remained connected.

As mentioned by WISPA’s CEO, Claude Aiken, at the first-ever WISP Virtual Summit in 2020, “WISPs step up and stand out… we have yet to find the limits of what WISPs can accomplish, and this pandemic is no different… WISP after WISP after WISP stood up to help their community.” Claude continued by expressing that, “WISPs play such an integral role in connecting all Americans to the internet—going where no terrestrial provider has gone before, providing better service than incumbents who take billions in government money—WISPs are both a player in the market place and the ones who make good on our nation’s promise to our unserved and underserved populations. That promise, that who you are and where you live shouldn’t define whether or not you have internet. I am proud to work for a group like this that has stepped up in so many ways.”

We know how important it is for WISPs to be aware of the changing fixed wireless industry landscape. As a result, we have put together an infographic that presents an overview of the fixed wireless industry in 2020.
