WATERLOO, ON – 01-11-2022 Aterlo Networks is thrilled to announce a donation of $4,140 to local social service nonprofit Supportive Housing of Waterloo (SHOW).

The money was raised by Aterlo’s 30 employees as part of the growing Waterloo, Ont. tech company’s annual holiday fundraiser. Aterlo matched the amount generated by employee donations to reach the final figure.

SHOW has been providing housing support and other essential services to the Waterloo community since 2007. The nonprofit currently operates three buildings, providing varying levels of support for marginalized members of our community. 362 Erb St. W. houses 30 individuals that have experienced homelessness, 402 Erb St. W. houses nine low-income individuals, and 144 Erb St. E. houses 25 low-income seniors.

In addition to housing, SHOW’s services include income support, individual and group counselling, transportation, a food bank/community pantry, crisis support, and a service coordination program that helps those in need access other services in the region.

“We are delighted to be able to support such a worthy organization,” said Gerrit Nagelhout, CEO of Aterlo. “SHOW provides truly essential services to our community that address the growing crisis in affordable housing and mental health. We’re proud that our employees chose to support SHOW and we’re honoured to be able to contribute in a small way to their vital work.”

An October 2021 report from the Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation found that housing prices in Waterloo Region are on par with some of the most expensive cities in the world, on a home price-to-income ratio. The average home price in the region recently surpassed $1M for the first time, while soaring rental prices have led to few available units and years-long waiting lists for addiction-supported and community housing.

“Providing housing is just one-step in eliminating homelessness,” said Leigh-Ann Christian, Donor Engagement Coordinator at SHOW. “Those coming from years-long stays on streets are often dealing with significant addiction, mental health and physical health issues. By providing programs and supports that address the specific needs for each of the residents at Supportive Housing of Waterloo, our goal is to help them transform their lives by achieving wellness, independence and a chance to reach their greatest potential.”

Added Leigh-Ann: “All of us at SHOW were overwhelmed by the generosity of the staff at Aterlo Networks. With so many amazing nonprofit organizations doing such great work in our community, we were honored that you entrusted us with this gift. From everyone here, thank you.”
